  • Mapole dancing 2018

Sun 22 Jul 2018 Mr Phoenix
Thank you to our team of 20 Maypole dancers who performed brilliantly at the Hampsthwaite Feast on Sunday afternoon. In the glorious sunshine, the children completed a series of 5 traditional dances including the circle dance, the 'barber's pole' and 'ropes'.  Children from Reception to Year 5 took part, and made a fabulous team. Well done!
  • Classes for September

Wed 11 Jul 2018 Mr Phoenix

Due to changes in pupils on roll since the letter I sent in May, we have reviewed the arrangements for staffing and classes for September.

Myself, staff and governors have been working hard together on the necessary planning and carrying out an in-depth analysis and consideration of options in order to forward plan successfully for the school – to give consideration to making best use of the staff and space we have available in school for the coming year for the good of the children. This is an interim year, as we move toward the opening of our new nursery classroom in 2019 which will give space for an extra junior class in main school in September 2019.

A copy of the letter sent home explaining further details is available here.

  • Year 1 and 2 Farm Visit

Tue 27 Mar 2018 Mr Phoenix

We had a super visit to the farm. A brisk walk from school up the hill took us there, and we were really pleased to be able to see calves, lambs and lots of potatoes! The children loved having the chance to stroke the newborn lambs, and we saw some very young lambs who had been born just about an hour before our visit. We learned about how the farmer uses technology to help with feeding and the animals' environments. The calves' feed is computer controlled to make sure each young cow gets a fair share of milk. In the potato barn, we worked out there were nearly 180,000 potatoes. We saw how the machine sorts and bags the potatoes ready for sale. At the start and end of our visit we made sure we were clean and had our wellies washed down.

A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Binns for inviting us to visit their farm - we had a lovely day out and learned so much for our science work on animals.

  • World Book Day 2018

Fri 02 Mar 2018 Mr Phoenix

Well done for coming to school in such fantastic costumes for our World Book Day celebrations 2018 - despite the freezing cold weather.

Again there was a huge range of brilliant costumes, and children had brought in favourite books to share - many of which linked to their dressing up outfit too.

Thank you to all our parents and families for supporting World Book Day and coming up with such creative ideas. It was lovely to see the children eagerly sharing their books during 'Buddy Reading' time.

Another great World Book Day - I am sure it will serve well to promote our love of reading.

  • School Closure due to severe weather - Feb/Mar 2018

Wed 28 Feb 2018 Mr Phoenix

7:15am  28/2/2018  Owing to severe weather conditions making the journey to school very hazardous for staff, parents and children, Hampsthwaite School was closed on Wednesday 28th February. The weather forecast was also for the conditions to worsen during the day. It was important to take the decision early in the day to ensure everyone's safety.

Parents were advised to check the school website for continued updates and further information about the coming days, as severe weather warnings remained in place from the Met Office for several days.

The Fairtrade Coffee Morning was rescheduled - to be held on Wednesday 7th March instead of 28th February, from 9am onwards. Parents and people from the local community were invited to join us on 7th March.

7:15am    1/3/2018 Due to the continuing severe weather, school was closed again on Thursday 1st March. Roads were treacherous with deep snow in places, and extra snow had fallen widely. As always, the safety of children, parents and staff remain the most important consideration in these very unusual and extreme conditions.

World Book Day celebrations which were due to happen on Thursday were rearranged to Friday 2nd March (weather permitting  -  please see separate news article on World Book Day 2018).

Parents were again thanked for their understanding, and advised to wrap up warm and take care.

  • Fun and teamwork in the snow

Tue 27 Feb 2018 Mr Phoenix

School remained open on Tuesday 27th February, and we had great fun outside in the snow during playtime. It was lovely to see the enjoyment on the children’s faces, and to see their teamwork in making the most of the white stuff on the school field. Despite the snow being quite dry and crumbly, some really impressive snowmen still emerged!

  • Music Assembly February 2018

Fri 23 Feb 2018 Mr Phoenix

Thank you to Mrs Borchard and to all the children who contributed their talents to the music assembly on Friday, and a big thank you to parents for your support in helping children with their music, practising and taking part in music on offer within and outside school.

It was wonderful to see such variety – variety of performances from solo to duet to group to whole class; the wide variety of instruments and the variety in the repertoire of musical styles. There is also such a variety of skills needed to perform to an audience – musical skills of memory, rhythm, listening, melody, timing and performance skills of confidence, commitment and concentration.

We are really proud of all our musicians throughout the school – again, well done to you all, it was a very enjoyable and impressive performance.

  • Christmas Choir 2017

Wed 06 Dec 2017 Mr Phoenix

Touring venues in and around Hampsthwaite, our school choir have enjoyed bringing festive cheer with their beautiful singing. We received a warm welcome at Hollins Hall, and also entertained lunchtime visitors to he Nelson Inn, along with visits to The Joiners Arms and Sophie's Coffee Shop. The children performed a mixture of traditional and modern Christmas songs and carols, and some of the children played their flutes to add to the occasion. Many thanks and well done to Mrs Borchard and all the children in the choir for their hard work and commitment to bringing this special part of Christmas to life again this year.

Visit our Gallery to listen to the flutes and some of the choir's singing
