HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT

 

Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.

 

HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - LANGUAGES INTENT

 

At Hampsthwaite, we feel learning another language gives children the valuable opportunity to develop positive attitudes to and respect for languages and cultures other than their own. We believe that learning another language is a crucial part of the children’s education, which allows children to develop self-belief as well as building their communication skills in a creative and exciting way. In our modern society, children now have the ability to communicate with others whilst fostering curiosity and deepen their understanding of both the world around them and their own language. We want to support and equip them with the skills and confidence to be able to do this.  

 

At Key Stage 1 there is no specific requirement for the teaching of MFL. However, children in KS1 begin to explore a new language through the use of songs, rhymes and games. This exposure gives them a foundation of knowing and using the vocabulary they will need to learn at KS2 and KS3.  

 

MFL is taught throughout the whole of KS2, where the teaching and learning of the language is built upon language blocks of knowledge that then develops in its complexity encouraging all pupils to create more complex and adventurous linguistic structures through verbal and written methods. This gives them a secure foundation for continued learning at KS3.
