Staff Responsible for Wellbeing
Katie Tennant - Pastoral Lead
Sheila Gibson - Wellbeing Lead (Y5/6 Class Teacher)
Alex Mawson - Wellbeing and Nurture Support Assistant
Over the course of their education, children spend over 7,800 hours at school. With such a huge amount of time spent in the classroom, schools provide an ideal environment for promoting good emotional wellbeing and identifying early behaviour changes and signs of mental distress. The social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviours that young people learn in the classroom can help them to build resilience and set the pattern for how they will manage their mental health throughout their lives.
Emotional wellbeing is a clear indicator of academic achievement, success and satisfaction in later life. Evidence shows that mental health and wellbeing programmes in schools, can lead to significant improvements in children’s mental health, and social and emotional skills. Wellbeing provision in schools can also lead to reductions in classroom disruptions.
Knowing the benefits of good wellbeing provision, at Hampsthwaite, we want to ensure that our education continues to be balanced as we truly believe that in doing this, we will help our children build resilience, look after their emotional wellbeing and go on to thrive in adulthood. We feel that our dedication to supporting the mental and physical wellbeing of our children is further reflected in the introduction of Wellbeing Ambassadors (September 2020), the appointment of a Pastoral Lead (September 2021) and our school wellbeing publication - 'The Happy Times', (which from Autumn '22 will be a termly publication, created by the Wellbeing Ambassadors) - all of which enable our children to contribute positively to our school environment, values and ethos and to feel that they have a voice in school which is listened to.
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors meet regularly to discuss the wellbeing of children at school and look at ways of raising the importance of wellbeing. They go into classrooms and talk about the 5 ways to wellbeing, highlight the wellbeing support available in school (eg The Worry Box, their ambassador role, wellbeing assemblies and events...) and allow the children the opportunity to share any of their current concerns. They lead days such as Children's Mental Health week, Anti-bullying days, Internet Safer etc
Extra Support
At different times in their lives, children will need additional support with their mental health and wellbeing.
At Hampsthwaite we have experienced teaching assistants who will support your children to make progress and take time out of lessons to help nurture them as confident individuals.
Every member of our staffing team is trained in supporting your child’s mental health.
Nurture groups, mindfulness sessions and structured emotional counselling sessions are all used as tools to meet the individual needs of children on a weekly and daily basis.
Our Pastoral Lead, Mrs Tennant, offers support to children and families who need to talk. She works with children on a one to one basis or in small groups. Parents, teachers and children can ask to speak to Mrs Tennant. She is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for appointments and can be contacted through the school office.
Once a fortnight, Emma Spick, from Just B, comes into school and works alongside identified children to give them the extra emotional support they need.

The children are able to take books home with them, which cover many aspects of mental health and well-being and can be shared with adults at home - a great way to open up well-being conversations with your children at home.
