HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT

Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.

Hampsthwaite Primary School – Literacy/English Vision

At Hampsthwaite Primary School we believe literacy and communication to be key life skills. We ensure all children are given the skills and knowledge to help them become effective communicators and we equip them with the spoken and written language to be effective learners in all areas of the curriculum. We understand that children will have varied interests in different aspects of English and we work hard to help each individual enjoy this area of the curriculum and be engaged and inspired. We are aware of some of the children’s preferences and opinions linked to aspects of English and because we know them as individuals we can ensure that the curriculum can be tailored to suit the child where possible, ensuring children have opportunities to be creative. We provide the children with a range of experiences and tasks to help them progress in English, taking account of all learning styles and preferred ways of working, recording etc. As a staff we use ongoing assessment to ensure we can meet the needs of all children. Children are encouraged to reflect on their individual learning experiences and achievements and to talk about their journey with adults and peers when reviewing their learning.

In writing we intend to:

  • provide opportunities for pupils to become confident, competent and expressive users of the language with a developing knowledge of how it works

  • provide opportunities for pupils to be reflective users of language, able to analyse and evaluate its main features

  • provide opportunities for role-play and drama

  • provide opportunities to write for a ‘real life’ purpose

  • enable children to be aware of an audience and purpose when writing in a range of styles and genres

  • encourage pupils to have fluent and legible handwriting

  • develop a love of writing so they develop confidence

  • inspire children by using a range of high quality texts to ignite interest and their imagination

HOW WE SUPPORT SEN IN WRITING

During both The Write Stuff units and one off targeted lessons, SEN children are supported by additional adult time and the use of resources. At Hampsthwaite School we use a range of resources to help the children with their writing while promoting independence at the same time. Children are given additional support such as word banks, spelling maths, sentence starters etc to help the children when gathering their ideas. This then means that all children have the basics to enable them to write. Visual lenses showing the lessons Success Criteria help children understand the specific expectations for each lesson.

As required children have access to 'Clicker', which is a child friendly word processor that helps the children write captions and sentences while using a pre-programmed word bank to help scaffold and support children's writing.

Targeted children have their own log in details to IDL which they can then access regularly in school and at home. This is software that we use with our children from Year 2 upwards who are showing dyslexic tendencies and need extra support with phonics, spelling, punctuation and reading.

Additional writing sessions to allow either pre-teaching or the consolidation of specific objects are taught where required. We also have KS2 phonics intervention groups using our whole school phonics programme Monster Phonics to ensure that the children fill in gaps in skills and knowledge from KS1.

At Hampsthwaite we believe that children will be engaged and enthusiastic about writing if the topic is something that interests them. Where relevant we tailor the children's writing to involve areas of interest e.g. dinosaurs, Minecraft, Mario.
