East Barnby 2022

MONDAY

First day at East Barnby and a busy one! We arrived and our first job was to make beds, that proved to be quite challenging! With a bit of teamwork though we succeeded. After unpacking and settling in we went for lunch and then on first activity.

Groups 1 and 2 went beck scrambling and 3 and 4 went into the woods to build shelters. Back to the centre for tea then we played an Alien scavenger hunt game. We finished with a campfire and hot chocolates.

TUESDAY

Day 2 at East Barnby and it has been full of activities. Groups 1 and 2 built Shelters in the woods this morning then went to the seaside this afternoon to look for sea creatures and fossils. We actually found the elusive sea hare which is a new addition to the ecology on the coast here. Groups 3 and 4 did beck scrambling this morning and then also went to the beach this afternoon. This evening we have done sledging and the night-line. That is definitely a staff highlight - can honestly say it is one of the funniest things to watch.

WEDNESDAY

Today has been our canoeing day. We loaded the boats and went to the river. Groups 1 & 2 went downstream and learned the skills of steering, paddling, racing & spinning. Groups 3 & 4 went upstream and learned the same skills then we all met up for a picnic lunch in the field.

After lunch Groups 1 & 2 went upstream - we had to battle the wind to paddle against it! We succeeded and played some ball games which nearly caused a few people to fall in they got so excited! Groups 3 & 4 formed rafts by tying pairs of canoes together to make them super powerful and stable. They then worked together to battle the wind and met the other two groups upstream. The rafts then challenged the canoes to a superhero game which was fiercely competitive. In the end Darth Vader won (which in the Y6s opinion isn't a superhero anyway!)

THURSDAY

The week seems to have flown by - hard to believe it is Thursday already! Today all the groups had the challenge of raft building.  Groups 1 and 3 went in the morning - it was a bit chillier then so we had wetsuits. Groups 2 and 4 got the afternoon - it was lovely and warm then so they welcomed a dip! It took lots of teamwork and perseverance to learn the knots, plan the design and create a raft using the logs, barrels and ropes. After we had built them then it was the real test - would they survive being launched and could we then get on them & paddle? Well you'll have to look at the pictures to see what happened!

Groups 1 & 2's other activity was skiing - seemed really strange for Group 1 (who got the afternoon) to be be skiing in the hot sunshine! We all learned to ski down crouching and standing and started to bring in turns.

Group 3 & 4's other activity was climbing on the indoor climbing wall. They all did some bouldering and then worked together to climb and belay each other.
