HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT
Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.
HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - MUSIC INTENT
At Hampsthwaite Church of England Primary School, we believe music brings together intellect, feelings and culture. It enables creativity, teamwork, reflection and enjoyment. It forges links between home, school and the wider world and develops friendships. Music encourages a positive attitude to learning and enables children to shine.
We understand that children will have varied interests and we work hard to help each individual be engaged and inspired.
Opportunities
By engaging children in making, responding to and performing music, opportunities are created to:
Enrichment
Wherever relevant and appropriate, music will be taught alongside the cross-curricular themes. However, some objectives will be taught in a discreet way.
Variety of audiences - peers, whole school, parents, wider community.
Listening to recorded music from a timeline of music through the ages on entry and exit to assemblies.
Live music - performance in assemblies and productions; visiting professional musicians.
Specific Instrumental Tuition - NYCC Music Service Peripatetic; in-school whole class teaching of descant recorder, tuned percussion and ukulele.
Celebration of lessons taken out of school showing respect and support.
Review and Respond
As a staff, we use ongoing assessment to ensure we meet the needs of all the children. Children are encouraged to review their own work and talk about their progress with a view to challenging themselves along their musical journey; giving children reasons to believe in themselves.

How we support children with SEND in Music
All children can achieve, at their own level in music. Children with SEN should be encouraged to explore how the music of a variety of genres, and from different cultures, makes them feel, and express this through the means most suitable to their differing needs. They should be encouraged to make music using tuned and untuned instruments that reflect their understanding and appreciation of a variety of stimuli that are adapted where needed.
What amendments are made to the subject in order to help children with SENs to achieve?
Extra time to repeat listening to stimulus music, to form opinions, to experiment with tuned and untuned instruments
Visual and multisensory prompts for musical terminology, instruments names, composers and other ‘fact’ based learning
fostering a can-do attitude, particularly with regards to performance, and support to express how the music makes them feel
A spiral curriculum (revisit and revise) - At the start of the lesson, children will be revisiting the vocabulary and keys facts you have learnt. This will give children with SEN more time and opportunities to understand the concepts and vital knowledge they need to access the learning.
Visual word maps - where appropriate we will create a visual word mat for your children with SEN.

FAT SAM'S GRAND SLAM - with actors, singers and dancers working together in full costume with props.
ROCKIN' ALL OVER THE WORLD - ukulele players, singers and air-guitarists - what a rockin' performance.

In addition to a wide range of instrumentalists (double bass, flute, drums, guitar and voice), we look forward to class performances: singing, ukulele, recorder and percussion composition.
We look forward to welcoming parents in to enjoy MUSIC at Hampsthwaite. Please be seated for a prompt 2pm start.
“Music is a language that doesn’t speak in particular words. It speaks in emotions, and if it’s in the bones, it’s in the bones.” ― Keith Richards
LIVE PERFORMANCE
It is wonderful to welcome performers across school to perform in assembly this half term.
So far, we have enjoyed a piano recital from George, Laura, Bobbie, Florence, Martha and Emma.
We are always looking for opportunities for children to perform and showcase their musical skills.
In December, the Christmas Choir will perform outside the Boar's Head, Ripley. This is an opportunity to perform to the general public and share the love of Christmas carols and songs.
As soon as we are able to welcome visitors into school, we hope to arrange for other live performers to come and share the wonders of live music.
