HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT

Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.

HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - PSHE/RSE INTENT

Here are Hampsthwaite Primary School we want to ensure that we embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life for our children. We support our children by giving them the knowledge and skills to enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Children put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives; and it is our role to ensure that they foster in themselves a sense of respect and belief in order that they flourish and achieve. PSHE can really support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help and to know where to access support. RSE is threaded through the PSHE curriculum, addressing issues at age suitable and relevant times.

A Letter from Ava, Y6

To All Families,

Welcome to Hampsthwaite.

Hampsthwaite is a diverse community that welcomes families of all shapes and sizes, not what what types may they be: nuclear, blended, single parent, adopted and many more. We already have lots of children from different variations of families. They all settle in and make lots of friends.

You can feel free to share your thoughts - we will listen no matter who you are.

Families should feel happy, safe, calm and enjoy fun.

Welcome to Hampsthwaite!

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

In our school, we want to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.

Teaching about mental wellbeing is central to these subjects, especially as a priority for parents is their children’s happiness. We know that children and young people are increasingly experiencing challenges, and that young people are at particular risk of feeling lonely.

How do we support children with SEN in our PSHE lessons?

SMSC

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development

Aspects of SMSC are threaded through the whole curriculum and school life at Hampsthwaite and not in isolation. There is a very strong link within the work covered in the PSHE and RE curriculum. The vision for the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development (SMSC) of children at Hampsthwaite is reflected in the school’s vision to Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish like a living, growing tree where we are all connected together. Through the teaching of the PSHE and RE curriculum,  alongside collective worship is their SMSC development. This is supported by the fundamental British values too.

Fundamental British Values

Fundamental British Values underpin what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain today, valuing our community and celebrating the diversity of the UK.

These values are:

DEMOCRACY, RULE OF LAW, MUTUAL RESPECT, TOLERANCE and INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY.

Protected Characteristics

At Hampsthwaite, the PSHE curriculum has been devised to ensure that staff are aware of the key protected characteristics. We believe it is important that children gain an understanding of the world in which they are growing up, and should learn to respect and live alongside a diverse range of people.

The KEY used refers to:

A = Age

G = Gender

MP = Maternity and Pregnancy

R = Race

RB = Religion or Belief

S = Sex

D = Disability

MCP = Marriage and Civil Partnership

Department for Education – statement January 2023

“Primary schools are not required to teach LGBT content but can choose to teach it in an age-appropriate way. The Department for Education has no plans to change its advice to schools on this subject.

RSHE is designed to give pupils the knowledge they need to lead happy, safe, and healthy lives and to foster respect for other people and for difference.

The statutory guidance states that all pupils should receive teaching on LGBT content during their school years. Secondary schools should include LGBT content in their teaching. Primary schools are strongly encouraged and enabled, when teaching about different types of family, to include families with same sex parents.

Through these subjects, children will be taught about the importance of respectful relationships and the different types of loving and healthy relationships that exist. This can be done in a way that respects everyone’s views.

All schools may teach about faith perspectives. In particular, schools with a religious character may teach the distinctive faith perspective on relationships, and balanced debate may take place about issues that are seen as contentious.

In addition, schools should ensure that parents know what will be taught and when, and clearly communicate the fact that parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE.

Schools should also ensure that, in developing their RSE policy, that they engage parents and provide examples of the resources they plan to use in lessons. We also expect schools to respond positively where parents ask to see specific materials, for example by inviting parents into the school to view materials where Copyright Law prevents them from sharing it online. The Department for Education has no plans to change its advice to schools on this subject.”

INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS

See the image of the interactive display in Team Griffin. Children encouraged to contribute their own comments as part of the British Value, INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY.

ONE-MINUTE DRAMAS

Small groups from Team Griffin have recently rehearsed and recorded short dramas to illustrate ONLINE SAFETY.

The one-minute dramas gave the clear message that children playing online games MUST NEVER give out their name, address, 'phone number or passwords.

Children from Team Griffin created a short movie demonstrating how we support one another and make visitors and newcomers feel welcome in our school.

VALUE CERTIFICATES

Across school, children's FRIENDSHIP, SUPPORT, RESPECT, CREATIVITY and BELIEF is celebrated by adults around school, but recently we have introduced certificates to be awarded in assembly. Recently, Adam demonstrated great support, friendship and respect towards his friend, when he reached out, putting his arm around him as he entered the playground and noticed a friend in need. This natural response and demonstration of the kindness was an example of how children at Hampsthwaite care for one another.

PSHE VIDEO PRESENTATION

Children from Team Griffin are working on some 'HEALTHY LIVING' video presentations for a KS1 audience. The intention is to educate the younger children about brushing their teeth, healthy food choices, the effect of exercise and how to keep a healthy mind.
