HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT

Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.

HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - GEOGRAPHY INTENT

In Geography, our aim is to respond to and develop children's curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and in places and environments in the wider world.

Our purpose is to instil an interest, fascination and desire to investigate a variety of human and physical characteristics of different places, both local and afar, through purposeful research and careful questioning.

To be well rounded citizens, we believe children need to understand the differences between places and their cultures and be able to recognise how these change over time.

We provide children with many opportunities to use a range of geographical skills to help them understand, present, analyse and communicate a range of information either collaboratively or as an individual. These skills are put into practice both inside and outside the classroom through local fieldwork and trips.

How we support SEND in Geographical Learning

We are ambitious about what our children with SEN can achieve whilst taking into consideration any special support they require.

What amendments are made to the subject in order to help children with SENs to reach their potential?

  • A spiral curriculum (revisit and revise) - At the start of the lesson, children will be revisiting the vocabulary and keys facts they have learnt. This will give children with SEN more time and opportunities to understand the concepts and vital knowledge they need to access the learning.

  • Visual word maps - Where appropriate we create a visual word mat for your children with SEN. These can be used to pre-teach new vocabulary prior to the lesson, to help children visualise the concepts they are using in class and to help with spelling and writing activities

  • Is your child colour blind? This is essential for our school to know. Map reading is a critical part of the geography curriculum. We can make amendments to the maps children work with based upon what colours they can perceive. Clickhere to learn more
