HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT

Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.

HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - HISTORY INTENT

History is an integral part of the curriculum at Hampsthwaite. We believe the study of history fires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to enjoy a better understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. They will work as historians where they will critically analyse different sources of information, allowing them to ask big questions and form their own early opinions and beliefs. History also helps children gain a sense of their own identity within a social, political, cultural and economic background. Because of this, we feel it is important for the subject to be taught discretely as well as incorporated within other curriculum subjects such as English and Art. We have detailed below an overview of what your child will expected to learn within each key stage.

In EYFS, we develop a sense of the past, through the Knowledge and Understanding of the World strand. Children begin their historical learning journey by developing a concept of past and present in their own lives and those of family members. They begin to think about the concept of a horizontal timeline to order events. They learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others, among families, communities and traditions. Skilled questioning helps the children explore how their lives and family have changed over time; how their pasts are different to each other; and how we can learn from other people’s lives.

Learning is firmly rooted in the children’s interests and therefore will take shape in different ways through sharing, reading and areas of provision.

In Key Stage 1 children will develop an awareness of the past. They will learn about significant individuals who have contributed to national and international achievements. Children will also learn about significant historical events within our local area. They will study changes within living memory as well as events beyond living memory that are nationally or globally significant such as The Great Fire of London. Their learning will be placed within a simple, chronological framework.

In Key Stage 2 children will continue to appreciate history in a chronological context. They will develop a secure understanding of British, local and world history. Children will consider connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. They will also learn to understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of different sources and spend time looking at, and dealing with, different sources of information.

How we support SEND in History

We are ambitious about what our children with SEND can achieve whilst taking into consideration any special support they require.

The attached document outlines support strategies for specific needs.  These have been developed with our SEND children over time and we continue to review and update them, as appropriate.
