HAMPSTHWAITE CURRICULUM INTENT
Education at Hampsthwaite is based on the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced in a way that ensures progression and the development of key knowledge and skills – embedding these within the children’s long term memory. We strive to ensure that our children’s creativity, interests and talents are nurtured so that they will be able to ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Flourish’ during their time with us.
HAMPSTHWAITE PRIMARY SCHOOL - ART AND DESIGN INTENT
At Hampsthwaite Primary School, we ensure children’s experiences of art are rich, diverse and process-driven. We try to instil in children a sense of awe and wonder when viewing art which is made by the human hand, inspired by nature and in their own work. Art is to be seen as a process, not an end-product and every attempt at creativity is valued with no focus on ‘perfection’. Children should be allowed to explore the limits of their creativity by ‘having a go’ and embracing their ‘mistakes’ as a great learning opportunity. Open-mindedness to different art styles and techniques across the ages and cultures is encouraged. Art is an opportunity to be mindful of oneself and to lose oneself in the creative process. Art for art’s sake is vital for the health and well-being of everybody and so children should be given the opportunity to play and explore artistically not only to enrich other areas of the curriculum but for their mental and emotional health.

Art Inspiration
As part of our enjoyment and appreciation of Art, a feature of our school newsletters is a section dedicated to ‘Art Inspiration’. This takes the form an image of a piece of artwork: a sculpture, drawing, painting or photo which will hopefully encourage deeper thinking about Art and its place in our world. Looking at Art can also act as a springboard for our own creative expression, so children are encouraged to pause and reflect on the chosen image with their parents or carers. Children upload a photo of their artwork to their class Seesaw page or bring the artwork in to show.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

Art Inspiration 2023 - 2024
The year has got off to a great start with children inspired by the art of Jackson Pollock. We looked at 'One: Number 1' and it provoked a lot of discussion - some children thought it was art and others didn't! Jessica and Felicity were inspired to have a go at their own 'Jackson Pollocks' at home 👏👏👏
Art Inspiration 2022 - 2023
This year, a wide range of artists, sculptors, architects and designers have inspired us to create our own art at home
These have included:
Zaha Hadid's futuristic building designs, 'Princess Elizabeth of York' portrait (1933) by Philip Laszlo, Joan Miro, Vincent Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night', James Tissot 'The Flight into Egypt', Georgia O'Keefe 'Abstraction White Rose', Rembrandt's 'Self-Portrait aged 63', Norman Foster's 'The Gherkin' building, Grayson Perry's 'Ceramic Pot', 'Springtime' by David Hockney and Benode Behari Mukherjee 'Still Life With Key' (1965).
DOODLES CLUB
Latest News - from January, I will be running a lunchtime 'Doodles' club for Key Stage 2 children to have a relaxing time whilst drawing, doodling and painting.
In our first session, we had a go at drawing Odin's Triangle and then had a little play with doodling colours and shapes in and around it.
Thank you to Gracie, Xavier and Ava (Team Titan), Florence, Flo and Matthew (Team Phoenix), Dayton, Logan and Erin (Team Griffin) and Sophia, Wren and Jessica (Team Unicorn).
Christmas Birds - Team Phoenix (Year 4/5)
Children used an ombre-effect wash for the background then used watercolours to paint the branches, berries and snow. Birds were created using a variety of collage materials including fabric and paper.
We look at famous artists and their artwork. As part of their topic work on Scandinavia, Team Phoenix studied Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'. Children took photos of their poses then added them to their pastel and crayon backgrounds.
Children in Team Titan (Year 5/6) were inspired by the work of graffiti artist Keith Haring to produce their own life-size figures; displayed in the school hall.
Children used mod-roc to design landscapes linked to their geography topic.
MEETING LOCAL ARTIST JAMES OWEN THOMAS
Team Phoenix had the opportunity to talk to local artist James Owen Thomas on Zoom about his wonderful collage artwork using 2d waste materials such as lottery tickets, train tickets and receipts. James is exhibiting his work at Horticap in Harrogate and is looking forward to showing the children his work in person.
