  • Power-Down Pete visits school

Mon 20 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix

We welcomed Power-Down Pete into school, to help us learn about looking after our planet, saving energy and cutting down on waste. Super-hero Pete explained how we are running out of space for landfill, and that the oceans are gradually filling up with plastic waste.

He showed us how we can all make a difference to the future of the planet by the way we deal with our waste. Re-use and recycling were a big feature here – and Pete showed us a pencil case made out of car tyres, pencils made from paper, playground safety surface made from chopped up old trainers, and even a poo-plane of paper made with purified elephant waste (which actually flew very well across the school hall!)
In classes, children listened to environmental stories, sorted out materials for recycling, visited the school compost bin, and Y5/6 made their own mini compost wormeries – yes, with real live worms in!

He also met with our eco-committee, who had the chance to do an energy survey with heat-detector sensors before meeting up to plan what we can do next as a school to make a positive difference for the environment.

  • Children In Need 2017

Fri 17 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix

Well done to our CTA children in Y6 who organised a fantastic day of activities, challenges and fun to raise money for BBC Children In Need. All classes took part in games in the hall, and had a go at guessing the number of spots on Pudsey and how many sweets were in a jar.

Across the school, children came in non-uniform and Pudsey dressing up, and some of the infants brought their teddies to school for the day. Results of the competitions were announced in assembly, along with the total money collected which was £184 including cash raised in the after-school cake bake.

    Thank you everyone!

  • School Sports Gold Award

Mon 06 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix
Hampsthwaite School has received the School Sports Award Gold plaque, in recognition of the work done across the school to promote and develop sport and fitness.
The award is given based on the amount of participation the school has in sports and fitness activities, the range of sports entered into at competitive level, the extra-curricular sporting opportunities the school offers and how children such as our Young Leaders are involved in planning and leading physical activities and sporting challenges.
A huge thank you to Ms Reynard, who coordinates sporting opportunities in school as our school PE leader. In assembly, Ms Reynard said “This award is about all the children – the work and effort they put in to their PE lessons, the commitment they show when representing the school in competition, and their eagerness to take part in extra-curricular sports. It’s a big ‘well done’ to everyone!”
