  • Power-Down Pete visits school

Mon 20 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix

We welcomed Power-Down Pete into school, to help us learn about looking after our planet, saving energy and cutting down on waste. Super-hero Pete explained how we are running out of space for landfill, and that the oceans are gradually filling up with plastic waste.

He showed us how we can all make a difference to the future of the planet by the way we deal with our waste. Re-use and recycling were a big feature here – and Pete showed us a pencil case made out of car tyres, pencils made from paper, playground safety surface made from chopped up old trainers, and even a poo-plane of paper made with purified elephant waste (which actually flew very well across the school hall!)
In classes, children listened to environmental stories, sorted out materials for recycling, visited the school compost bin, and Y5/6 made their own mini compost wormeries – yes, with real live worms in!

He also met with our eco-committee, who had the chance to do an energy survey with heat-detector sensors before meeting up to plan what we can do next as a school to make a positive difference for the environment.

  • Children In Need 2017

Fri 17 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix

Well done to our CTA children in Y6 who organised a fantastic day of activities, challenges and fun to raise money for BBC Children In Need. All classes took part in games in the hall, and had a go at guessing the number of spots on Pudsey and how many sweets were in a jar.

Across the school, children came in non-uniform and Pudsey dressing up, and some of the infants brought their teddies to school for the day. Results of the competitions were announced in assembly, along with the total money collected which was £184 including cash raised in the after-school cake bake.

    Thank you everyone!

  • School Sports Gold Award

Mon 06 Nov 2017 Mr Phoenix
Hampsthwaite School has received the School Sports Award Gold plaque, in recognition of the work done across the school to promote and develop sport and fitness.
The award is given based on the amount of participation the school has in sports and fitness activities, the range of sports entered into at competitive level, the extra-curricular sporting opportunities the school offers and how children such as our Young Leaders are involved in planning and leading physical activities and sporting challenges.
A huge thank you to Ms Reynard, who coordinates sporting opportunities in school as our school PE leader. In assembly, Ms Reynard said “This award is about all the children – the work and effort they put in to their PE lessons, the commitment they show when representing the school in competition, and their eagerness to take part in extra-curricular sports. It’s a big ‘well done’ to everyone!”
  • Happy Birthday Mrs Jennings!

Fri 20 Oct 2017 Mr Phoenix

We had a super end to the half term with the celebration of a special birthday! With a rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday' and a special surprise birthday cake, all the children wished Mrs Jennings 'many happy returns of the day'.

There were shrieks of delight from the children when over 100 birthday cards came tumbling out from the birthday cake - one card from each child in the school and nursery!

We all hope Mrs Jennings has a lovely half term holiday - and enjoys having a rest from cooking all those school dinners!

  • Medal winners in Swimming Gala area finals

Tue 17 Oct 2017 Mr Phoenix

Hampsthwaite's great swimming record continues as our swimmers put in another excellent performance at the Tolly Richardson Swimming Gala area finals. Competing against the top 16 schools in the area, Hampsthwaite held a strong position from the start, winning a number of their heats and clocking up some very fast times. Scooping a massive 149 points, Hampsthwaite came in Bronze medal position in the end, after a tense set of relay races finished the competition.

Thanks to all our parents and friends who came along to the Hydro and were great team supporters!

We are really proud of our swim team - very well done to you all.

  • Silver medals as Hampsthwaite swim to the finals

Thu 28 Sep 2017 Mr Phoenix

Congratulations to the Hampsthwaite swimming team, who performed brilliantly at the Tolly Richardson swimming gala. Held on Thursday 28th September, we competed against 16 schools at the Hydro pool. Scoring a massive 169 points overall, Hampsthwaite held a strong position throughout the gala, coming in first place in the first round, joint first at the end of the third round, and just 3 points behind the winners in the end, to come in a close 2nd place. It was great to see the team spirit as they cheered each other on during each heat, and we had a nail-biting finish as the relay races took place. Well done to all our swimmers: Gabriel, Freya, Archie, Isabella, Louis, Isaac, Lucy, Imogen, Martha, Harry and Fynn, who have earned themselves a proud place in the finals which will take place on 17th October.

Thank you to Lynn, Phil and all the Hydro team who made the gala a very enjoyable and exciting event, with a fantastic atmosphere.

  • Buddy Reading

Mon 25 Sep 2017 Mr Phoenix

Children across the school had a very enjoyable ‘Buddy Reading’ session on Monday. Pairing up with children from other classes, everyone was able to share their favourite book. It was wonderful to see the younger children proudly reading their books to the juniors, and the juniors enjoying reading to the little ones. There was a great range of books, and it’s lovely that many of them were clearly treasured favourites. Our buddy reading sessions really help build up a love of reading, and give the children a chance to chat about authors, stories, adventures, characters, facts and figures and more.

Thank you to all our parents and carers for sending in favourite books!

  • Infant Visit to Saltburn-on-Sea 2017

Fri 14 Jul 2017 Mr Phoenix

Children from Reception Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a fabulous day out at the seaside. Beginning with the park and gardens, we then travelled by miniature railway down to the seafront for a fish-and-chip lunch. We headed onto the beach for digging, building, games and of course going for a paddle in the water. After an ice-lolly treat, we travelled by tramway up the cliff to end the day. All the children had a great time, and staff from the fish and chip shop commented on what well-behaved children we have at our school. Have a look at our gallery for lots of photos of our day out.

  • Sports Day 2017

Mon 26 Jun 2017 Mr Phoenix

Sports Day 2017 was a roaring success - not only with wonderful weather, but also in the way the children took part with such positive spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship. It was lovely to welcome a large crowd of parents to support everyone. Well done to Luca and Lalousha for running the Hampsthwaite Mile in the fastest times, and to our Yellow Team who amassed the most points in sports day overall to win the Sports Day cup. A great day, and lots of fun!

  • Book Fair 2017

Fri 16 Jun 2017 Mr Phoenix

Thank you to everyone who came along to support the Book Fair this week. It was great to see the children enjoying browsing through the books, while the parents worked out the best way to make the most of the 3 for 2 offer!

In all, over £250 of books was sold, giving the school over £60 in commission. We have spent the commission on several new books for every class.

    Well done everyone.
